How Can We Fix American Health?
My name is John, I am a student at Rutland High School currently enrolled in a STEM Capstone class in which we are given the task of completing one large research paper on a topic of choice. Obsessed with human movement, I decided to conduct my research on American health (specifically how to improve it), how the body is meant to function, and how to reach said level of function. This website marks the interweb manifestation of my findings (as well as my opinions on the subject). If you suffer chronic pain, wish to improve your health, or posses some general curiosity then I invite you to peruse the site.
The questions I sought answers to:
I will not be able to go into the detail and scope of correcting human movement and restoring function as I would like, so if these topics interest you or you think you might benefit from such knowledge I will point you to the best resources on physical therapy I found: The Pain Free Program (more clinical), Becoming a Supple Leopard (crossfit), Ready to Run (crossfit), and NASM Essentials of Corrective Exercise Training (clinical. although, I have yet to read this one).

The questions I sought answers to:
- What of obesity? What causes obesity and what can help shed pounds? What should we do to help alleviate the "epidemic," if anything at all? I did not want to focus too much on this topic, since America as a whole focuses on it a lot, but, with my research question, I felt obligated to address it.
- What does exercise do for humans? We know that exercise can make people look pretty, or drop pounds or blood pressure, but I wanted to address some of the less banal benefits. What ailments (from anxiety to cancer) can be prevented through exercise? What types of exercise best accomplishes these preventative goals and through what mechanisms?
- Is there a blueprint for human movement? If so, what is it?
- Finally, how can people fix common musculoskeletal health problems (such as chronic pain) through simple exercises and little cost rather than traditional medicine, and all the expenses that brings. This is the big one, the topic I wish to focus the most on. I will talk about adhesions, immobility and muscular imbalance, then apply these concepts to common problems and explain how to fix them. I will most likely address how to fix valgus posture (knock-knees/flat feet) with an emphasis on barefoot running, back pain (postural extension and flexion rather than neutral), and shoulder stability.
